It's actually older than you think. In fact, here's photographic evidence that folding bikes were in use as early as WWI.

You can look up the history of the folding bike on foldingcyclist.com. It first recounts the invention of the bicycle, then segues into the history of the folding bike. Though the article did not specify the exact date of when the folding bike was invented (because quite a number of people invented their version of the folding bike and filed patents for their inventions), the article at least pinpointed that the folding bike was invented in the late 19th century, almost nearly the turn of the 20th century. Have a read. Then afterwards you'll never look at your folding bike the same again.
