The Differences between V Brakes & Disc Brakes

Firstly, before we discuss the differences between a V brake (also known as rim brake) and a disc brake, we need to focus on the kind of bicycle used as an example in this article.

The bicycle in question is a folding bike. A folding bike, unlike a mountain bike or a racing bike, is normally used on leisure rides on an even path, like in the park, for example. It's not used on rugged terrain and definitely for competitive racing on a long route that covers hills and long descents. With that in mind, we now turn what kind of a brake system that is better for a folding bike.

The simple difference between a V brake and a disc brake is that a V brake compresses rubber pads against the rim of the wheel, while a disc brake works by compressing the disc against a rotor mounted on the hub of the wheel.

Pros of V brakes: Simple, effective, light & inexpensive.
Cons of V brakes: If it happens to rain and the path gets wet and even muddy, the brake will make squealing noises, especially if you go downhill. When ridden in mud over a long period of time, the pads of the V brake will wear out the rims of the wheel.

We need not remind you that we're talking about a folding bike here, and not a mountain bike or a racing bike, so the likelihood of you riding this bike on a rugged and muddy terrain is very slim.

Pro of disc brakes: They provide more stopping power compared to V brakes
Cons of disc brakes: Not as simple as V brakes, also heavier and much more expensive.

Well, when it comes to price, YTX's 1607 Eco-Park Comp folding bike, which uses a V brake system, is currently priced at RM717, while YTX's Schwin 2006 Destiny Shimano SL-TX30 20" folding bike, which uses the disc brake system, is currently priced at RM358.

So, we guess it's up to you, really. Which do you think is value for money? Visit our Brand Street page on Dinasou.com to see the whole selection of folding bikes.
